Our Services

IconPreventative Care

We believe in proactively managing your pet’s health so they live longer, happier, healthier lives. Regular check-ups and preventative care reduce long-term health risks and costs. Our approach is personalized, tailoring care to your pet’s unique age, breed, and lifestyle to ensure they thrive at every stage of life. Our wellness care services include vaccines, routine bloodwork, parasite prevention, nutritional counseling, microchipping, annual wellness exams, and more.

By age three, over 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of dental disease. Left untreated, oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream, potentially impacting other areas of the body. At Companion Animal Clinic, we prioritize pet’s oral health with comprehensive dental services, including routine dental exams, professional pet teeth cleanings, and extractions if necessary.

Our experienced veterinary team provides a full range of pet surgery services, including spays, neuters, mass removals, soft tissue procedures, and complex surgeries like perineal urethrostomies. We also perform surgery for exotic pets. Every procedure is handled with advanced monitoring, pain management, and attentive post-op care to keep your pet safe and comfortable.

When your pet isn’t feeling their best, timely answers matter. We offer in-house diagnostic testing for cats, dogs, and exotic pets, including bloodwork, urinalysis, digital radiology, and more, which help us quickly assess your pet’s health and create a treatment plan. We also partner with trusted labs for advanced testing as needed.

We’re proud to offer veterinary acupuncture as part of our holistic approach to care. Performed by Dr. Moore, acupuncture can help manage pain, support recovery, reduce anxiety, and improve quality of life, especially for pets with arthritis, chronic conditions, or mobility issues.

Our Story

Since 1974, Companion Animal Clinic has been a cornerstone of veterinary care in Blacksburg, VA, known for our medical excellence, deep community roots, and personal approach to care. Founded by Dr. Jim Shuler, a Virginia Tech graduate with a background in animal husbandry, the clinic has grown alongside the families and pets we serve.

As Blacksburg’s only AAHA-accredited animal hospital, we meet the highest standards in safety, training, and client communication. Many of our veterinarians, including Dr. Matt McCormick who joined the team in 1989, have built decades-long relationships with clients, offering consistency and trust that’s hard to find elsewhere.

At Companion Animal Clinic, we combine advanced veterinary care with a small-town, connected feel—delivering the kind of partnership and continuity that pets and their people deserve.
